“Interrupt them with happiness!”
I certainly didn’t expect to hear that on a finance podcast.
But that’s what he said:
Interrupt them with happiness!
Rob Moore (otherwise known as The Disruptive Entrepreneur) was talking about surprising ways to deal with negative friends and family.
So what did he say, David?
And what’s this “interrupting with happiness” about?
Dealing With Negative Feedback
Often, we’re told to get rid of negative people from our lives.
But…
Some negative feedback can:
- help us
- prevent us from making mistakes
- make us stronger.
So we need to pick the feedback that will help us – and learn from it.
And reject the rest.
But what about negative family members?
Negative Talk From Family Members
We’ve all come across those people who are continually negative, and drain us dry.
But what can you do when those negative people are family members?
How do you deal with negative friends and family? Here's how... Share on XAfter all, as the saying goes:
You can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family.
Here’s what Rob does when family conversation goes negative:
- Interrupt them with positivity.
- Kill them with kindness.
- Keep changing the subject of the conversation back into an empowering way.
And he calls this “Interrupting With Happiness”.
It’s About Them
Rob reminded me never to take criticism personally.
If someone is
- always negative
- has lots of hang-ups
- sees everything as bleak…
It’s because that’s how they are. Not you.
So don’t take their criticism personally.
Just thank them for the feedback, and continue to…

Thanks, Rob
I just want to give a shout out to Rob Moore who came up with that phrase: “interrupt them with happiness”.
If I hadn’t heard it on his podcast, I wouldn’t be sharing it with you now.
You can check out his website and podcasts here. And I’d certainly recommend his book, Life Leverage; I’ve read it and got a lot of great ideas.
Thanks, Rob!
Here’s a great book from Rob Moore.
I’ve read it and thoroughly recommend it.
It’s on Amazon – check it out.

Hey David
I think it’s so important to realise that some people are just like that and we have to accept them as they are.
We have to learn to know who is worth actually paying attention to with their criticisms and who is negative just for the sake of it.
Great piece!
David says
Thank you, Anne.
You’re absolutely right. Some people are just negative, whilst others want to offer constructive criticism.
I try to identify and be thankful for those people who help me grow, whilst filtering out the continually negative people.
Great thoughts. Thank you!
